Civil War Gowns Tuesday, April 12, 2011 Okay so I have discovered that shopping at goodwill yeilds the best clothes if you go an hour before closing! I think they are really getting it all out on the floor then to sort in the morning ~ I found these the other day: The top dress is a vintage kids dress ~ Possibly grandma made, it has no flaws. It fits me like a baby doll dress! I love the puffy sleaves, the brocade texture, and the gorgeous peach color (which really looks iffy with my skin and hair but I love the color anyway). It's above the knee ~ safe enough to wear without tights but I probably won't take the chances. The bag is an italian woven leather shoulder bag by Desmo. It's gorgeous and I was drawn to it because of it's practical shape, the sturdy leather weaving and that designer bag smell lol. It has a fullness that will fit my canon camera, and has a change pocket and pouch. My aunt (bag queen) approves and even has a few Desmo bags! The last photo is a civil war era costume gown! It's a cheap rendition but still a very neat thing to find and add to my costume box. I tell you, I live in a city (Charleston, SC) that likes to live in the past. Civil war re-enactments are big here and it's not uncommon to see women dress in southern belle gowns - like above (but hand made!). It's really quite neat. If only it was about the costuming and historic tales, but there is still a strong confederate sentiment and old-fashioned politics which leaves me from wanting to participate in any historical events here (being a european yankee from NY). Just the othernight at city market ~ two older ladies in "antebellum" (1890's I beleive) dress ~ big hats included, came to sample my soaps. They even talked in character with the old proper southern accent telling me "This is quite lovely" and as I told them what's in the soap - "There is evening primrose and honey in this one ~ which provide luxurious moisterizer and skin softening" she replied with "Oh, Indeed. It is just lovely." She and her friend lived in homes that were apart of the historic home and gardens tour! I love local history as I've always been an enthusiast growing up on long island where you can attend colonial barnyard dancing, flapper tea parties, and visit museums dedicated to eerie 1900's immigrant slums to the glamorous 1920's museums and estates. But here history is a bit darker from start to nearly present and there are far too many southern people willing to give up civil war tensions, even ideology. They won't forgive or forget that the north tore through the south - burning cities, raping women, obliterating men, stealing heirlooms, and so on. And so the south took a long time to recover from the war-inflicted damage. The rich were poor and had to start from scratch. The south remained mainly agricultural and while the north thrived into the industrial era - the southern hatred towards freed black men and women began the civil rights era. There is very little to celebrate in southern american history in my opinion except the end of such human catastrophies (slavery - black and white school integration). Well tomorrow in South Carolina ~ people are celebrating the START of the civil war. I think celebrate is wrong term, but nevertheless, that is what the city paper reads! I could go on ~ but I do have a northern view of American history. My boyfriend and I compare our school history from growing up all the time and it's not merely bias as in southern and northern history is written differently -we just seem to have learned about different things, and I learned about history more graphically as well. We had holocaust month and down here they focus more for black history month (we only had an educational day or two for this ~ and then we always had a day for hispanic heritage month which my bf never heard of) *Hana* Labels: charleston, clothes, fashion, history, politics, shopping, thrift

Weird Dreams Wednesday, March 9, 2011 I just woke from a 20 hour slumber (sickness) and dreamt a lot last night. In one dream I was in a competition such as "Top Chef" and we had to cook anything with whatever main dish they threw at us. My whole family with in it also. I was thrown a chicken and started sobbing because I told the producers I won't handle meat ~ my parents were like suck it up!! Everyone got some big animal and then I didn't feel bad all I had was a chicken, but an Indian veg guy I dated was in my dream ~ and he had been thrown a cow! Haha he was sulking and wondering what to do. I was thinking to myself ~ maybe I should trade animals with him - Well no I don't want a cow I don't eat cows either- but cows are so holy to him his going through this big moral epiphany right now - well it's the luck of the draw, I'll stick with the chicken. I cooked up a chicken gravy soup with risotto and scallops in the center. This all took place in a house on a farm/jungle with wild animals running around and my dog Salli was with us. My dog went out to pee and was attacked by a male lion! So she ran inside and started playing with the female lion who was chilling with everyone on the couch, Sal probably just thought this was a big cat. Soon the female playfully ran outside and sally ran after, we were all screaming "NOO GET BACK HERE NO NO SALLIIIIII!!" And then she was lured to her death as the female lion ran to meet the male and he lept out of the dark and we heard salli yelping and wathced her run away but they ran after her. I was screaming and my parents were holding me back because I was going to run and save her risking my life, but the lions killed salli -_- After that all the men on the farm were giving me hugs to make me feel better ~ but they all ended up trying to grope me in my misery! My boyfriend wants to get me a dog for my birthday, I want a redbone coonhound lol. I told Joe it's the perfect dog for us, southern 'bred' and buttered plus natural hunting instincts - things he looks for, and he has things I look for ~ intelligence, beauty, and under 24 inches. I want to spare a little coon puppy from the red neck life. I will acquaint her with cats and bunnies so her desire to eat them is tamed. But I really want a bunny!! (Dogs need a lot more free time, plus I have Salli mom's dog, aka "little sister") I don't want a handbag dog ~ while thats adorable (I tried to carry salli around in my bags when she was a pup) it's too froofy even for me.
Valentine's Weekend Monday, February 14, 2011 With J living in Columbia now we spend our weekends together and we had the whole weekend to celebrate valentine's day! His ideas to impress me are sweet and endearing haha but he is always a little clueless. He said "don't eat dinner, I am preparing the perfect vegetarian meal to surprise you." So when I got up to Col., he presented me with a giant fruit bowl ~ full of (uncut) apples oranges grapes bananas and a whole pineapple lol!! I was like "oh wow!! Not a hint of animal in sight, very thoughtful of you sweetie" I got gold diamond stud earrings for a present ~ there's two of them, medium and small size. Wow they are perfect for starting second ear holes! We drank the champagne that I brought up while he was doing his antrhopology homework. It's all about primates and quite interesting. I get drunk so fast and found the monkey pictures and facts HILARIOUS. This thing had me laughing long after the homework was done ~ It's the Emporer Tamarin. Named after some british royalman with the exact same moustache. The description on his homework to find the species for was "Curled white moustache and beard. Looks like a Dr. Seuss charachter" HAHAHAH Omg I love you emporer tamarin. Next on the homework was a video about lemurs and the scientists trying to decode lemurs emotions and thoughts as they have been discovered to be "deep thinkers". HAHAHA. I was sooo buzzed, joe kept telling me to quiet so he can find the answers to the video questions but I kept going on about Lemurs reading Neitzsche and how enjoy deep discussions about modern art and debate jungle politics. So, enthused about primates, J and I had a educational and fun date at the zoo the next day! He lives practically 5 minutes from the zoo. And the place really exceeded my expectations!! I have never even been to a zoo but I've heard only horrible things about them. I don't know how keeping animals in captivity can be so bad ~ the columbia zoo animals were so well cared for and happy. Just look: The two gorgeous lions are clearly smiling!! Oh their smiles make me so happy. The female looks like my cat Mr. Big and he smiles when he is laying in the sun or eating. MMMM GET IN MY BELLY!! I made crab legs that morning for us so when we found this mutant crab (a japanese crab) J and I had started craving for it all over again. (Well yes I'm veg ~ pescatarian so only I don't eat land animals lol) Piranha fish^ Ohhh I love llamas!! They have amazing doe eyes and long curly lashes hehe. So cute :D The zoo also features a giraffe lookout, kangaroo walk (with mini kangs) which is a trail going through their actual den, no fence! (Sadly we missed the times for this). Beautiful elephants. In the lion's den was a monkey haha J was like "Wonder why they keep a moneky with the lions". The birds make monkey sounds which is hilarious ~ I heard them from far away and I thought "More monkies that way!" when we followed the sound we saw a bunch of dancing parakeets hooting and hollering. I have heard that parrots/parrakeets can imitate the sounds of dogs and cats to HEHE. I wonder if the would do lion roars and elephant noises. Not only are many animals put into grave danger due to changing climate and deforestation, but many african animals ~ like primate species and birds ~ are hunted by tribes. These are primative tribes that hunt to survive, but I wonder if they know what they are doing is wiping out a whole species. Sadly captivity, though less than ideal, is the only way to keep many animal species alive. A baboon was born a couple of years ago at the columbia zoo, that's for good news! That's all for now ~ Happy Valentine's day *Hana* Labels: animals, dating, holiday, pictures, zoo |
